Judaism affirms the reality and acceptance of death. Jewish law and tradition regarding death, funerals and mourning is based on two essential principles: respect for the dead (k'vod hamet) and consolation of the mourners (nichum avaylim).
Kol Shofar provides mourners with a variety of services and community support.
Chevra Kadisha (Burial Society) is a volunteer-led service made up of members of Kol Shofar who assist congregants who have had a loss. The assistance they offer includes preparing the body of the departed for burial according to Jewish law and tradition. It also includes organizing shiva minyanim, preparing meals for mourners, and any other service that may be needed by an individual or family in mourning.
A list of the mortuaries and a description of the Chevra Kadisha's duties can be found in a booklet published by Kol Shofar entitled "The Jewish Way of Grief and Mourning." A copy can be obtained by calling the Kol Shofar office.
