50 Years of Singing, Prayer, and Meditation

As we celebrate our 50th year anniversary, join us as we spotlight song-filled prayer in our community. The melodies may have changed a little over the last 50 years, but we remain a community that loves to sing. In recent years, our MASA process has focused our attention on the enhancing the joy, musicality, and inclusivity of our prayer services. These five programs will help us explore these issues and help us sing our way into the next 50 years.

Prayer and Dissonance:
What if I don’t believe the words?

with Rabbi Gail Diamond
Sunday, January 29, 10:00 AM

How does one pray or sing in shul while struggling with your own personal belief about the words? Engage in conversation with us about how one prays when they are struggling with the meaning of the words. Hear different perspectives, learn the intention of prayers and gain a better understanding for how one can bring prayer into their life more fully. Rabbi Gail Diamond teaches Psalms at the Conservative Yeshiva and serves as the Yeshiva’s Associate Director. She teaches at the Fuchsberg Center for Conservative Judaism and has taught for the Academy for Jewish Religion and Bat Kol Institute. She received ordination from the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College.

Free. Please register with Hagar Ben-Eliezer, hben-eliezer@kolshofar.org or 415.388.1818 ext. 111.

Yoga and Otiyot Chayot with Kavannah
with Kristin Johnson and Ellen Tobe
Sundays at 10:00 AM:
January 22, March 4, April 29

Through meditative movements based on Yoga and Otiyot Chayyot, a system of gentle Hebrew-letter movements, we will start each class by ‘climbing up the ladder of the tree of life’ from malchut to keter with gentle movements. Learn a kavannah for the day, and related words and phrases with movement from both practices. We will learn a movement and breath yoga practice, and come back down the ladder as we close. To learn more, see Yoga and Otiyot Chayot.
